Makana

Sol ‘Makana’ Kahn was born on Kauai in 1979. His love for the ocean, art and Hawaiian culture was apparent from the beginning Along with being an avid fisherman and free-diver he started body boarding at age 2 and has been in the water ever since.

Makana’s early years were spent in the art room covered in clay, his passion for molding life into inanimate objects eventually lead him to Oahu where he majored in art at the University of Hawaii.
In 2007, while pursuing a career in acting and modeling in Hollywood, Makana missed his island home. The ‘Makau’, Hawaiian fishhook necklaces always reminded him of his island paradise so he started carving and soon after returned to Kauai.

“When I am in the process of shaping a hook I sometimes close my eyes and imagine the hook catching a fish. I don’t make a piece of art, the medium that I’m working with tells me what to do and I become the medium to create it, it’s been there all along.”

Giving a gift of a Hawaiian fishhook to somebody is highly symbolic and deeply meaningful, symbolizing strength and prosperity, and is said to bring good luck for those traveling at sea. In addition, the wearer enjoys the prestige of being a great provider.
